Discover the Power of Food and Nutrition
Written by Lori Bumbaco, MS, RDN, CSO, LDN, Oncology Dietitian
Often, individuals who are diagnosed with cancer are interested in learning how food and beverage choices have the power to help us thrive. To get the most benefit from the foods and beverages we eat throughout the week, there are some general tips to consider. Healthful foods from a variety of options supply us with the nutrients we need. Fad diets that advertise miracle cures or quick solutions for weight loss are problematic because they promote unsustainable habits and may result in nutrient deficiencies.
Evidence suggests eating a pattern of healthy foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, and fortified soy foods. At the same time, it is beneficial to limit added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium. Eating this way helps to reduce the risk for diet-related chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. Dietitians are the most helpful experts to help you pursue an eating pattern that works best for you.
A variety of food choices will bring different nutrients to your diet and can be done using simple, affordable strategies. For example, choose different colored fruits and vegetables throughout the week. Dark green choices like broccoli or spinach, red and orange choices like carrots or bell peppers, and other vegetables like cauliflower, corn, and potatoes all provide unique nutrients in small packages. Do not be afraid to take advantage of convenient choices in the frozen section, which not only provide nutrients without salt and sugar, but also are budget-friendly.
An important consideration of eating healthy is planning. When we create a grocery list from a meal plan, we are more likely to stay true to our intentions. Some of the best pantry staples are versatile and economical. Canned products like beans, lentils, and tomatoes, along with whole grains, oats, quinoa, and brown rice, provide a blank slate to create simple, satisfying meals.
Whether you are looking at nutrition headlines or searching for nutritious options to eat, improve your confidence with accurate sources of information. The best way to gain confidence about food choices is working with a dietitian. Registered dietitians are skilled at helping people adopt a healthy eating pattern that is mindful of their personal food and cultural preferences. Some dietitians also specialize in different areas, such as oncology or diabetes. Enjoy the month of March with nutrition in mind and invite the power of nutrition to your plate!
